Urban Microclimate
Energy
We assess the impact of the urban microclimate on the energy demand of buildings. A wide range of scales and physical phenomena influence the energy demand of buildings in urban areas.
We conduct CFD simulations to determine the air temperatures and the convective heat and mass transfer at building façades. Further we run detailed radiation, heat and vapor transport, wind-driven rain, vegetation and building energy simulations.
Comfort
We develop measures to assess outdoor comfort at different physical scales. We conduct combined CFD and radiation simulations to predict outdoor air and building surface temperatures in urban areas. In addition to air temperature , wind speeds and solar and thermal irradiation have also an impact on the comfort.
We evaluate approaches to mitigate local heat islands and to improve the thermal comfort of pedestrians in urban areas.
