ALLOY DESIGN AND PROCESSING

  • Fundamentals of (inter-)diffusion, chemical reactions and phase transformations in metals and alloys during processing and subsequent operation (development of corresponding thermodynamic and kinetic databases).

  • Microstructural engineering of functional alloys and metal-based composites and hybrid components for operation under extreme conditions (e.g. at high temperatures in reactive atmospheres under complex loading conditions).

  • Development and optimization of base materials, powders and processing routes for 3D manufacturing of e.g. structural intermetallics, metal-matrix-composites and oxide-particle-reinforced alloys.
 
JOINING OF COMPLEX MULTI-MATERIAL ASSEMBLIES

  • Design and manufacturing of complex multi-material assemblies and hybrid structures for operation under extreme conditions.

  • Design of braze filler materials, solder alloys, coatings and metallizations for joining of complex multi-material assemblies.

  • Development of transient-liquid phase (TLP) bonding technologies for joining at low temperatures, but subsequent operation at high temperatures.
 
INTEGRITY AND DURABILITY OF MULTI-JOINT ASSEMBLIES

  • Experimental assessment and model prediction of the mechanical integrity of joined assemblies and metal-based components in reactive atmospheres under complex loading conditions.

  • Experimental assessment and modelling of (thermo-)mechanical reponse of multi-joint assemblies and metal-based components.
