Seasonal heat and hybrid storage
NaOH absorption based seasonal heat storage technology

Energy storage is a major challenge when renewable energies become common. Empa is therefore investigating novel energy storage concepts. One component currently under development is a thermo-chemical long-term thermal storage. The operating principle is based on absorption of water by highly hygroscopic materials. During charging (storage), heating the chemical storage leads to evaporation of water. During this process, chemical energy is stored, which can be released again at a later time. For discharging the stored energy, water vapour is reabsorbed and will release chemical energy in the form of heat. Solar heat collected during the summer can be stored without thermal losses and used for heating and hot water during the cold season.                                                             >>> Poster
